Introduction. The article discusses some aspects related to the organization of the FIFA World Cup in Russian Federation.
Methods. On the basis of scientific literature on the history of football, as well as analytical and review articles in the international press concerning the organization and holding of the 2018 World Cup, the author considers football as a phenomenon of mass culture, its evolution and socio-political aspects; some moments of the history of the home World Cup since the victory of Russia's application for its holding; the impact of the championship on the international prestige of the country, etc. Issues related to the «football» geopolitical confrontation that threatened international isolation of this major sporting event and other characteristic features of the FIFA World Cup in Russia are considered separately.
Conclusion. According to the results of the study, it is concluded that the successful holding of the World Cup in Russia has become an important milestone in the recent history of the country, which can have a multifaceted impact on its further development.
