Introduction. The aviation activity of the 4th Air Army in the Crimean liberation operation is partially considered in encyclopedias dedicated to the Second World War. A significant layer of material is in the memoirs: Commander of the 4th Air Army K.A. Vershinin, commander of the Separate Maritime Army A.I. Eremenko, TsAMO RF funds, documents of funds of the 214th Assault Aviation Division, 4th Air Army. At the same time, despite the significance and fundamental nature of these works, the question of the participation of attack aircraft in the operation to liberate the Crimea in 1944 remains insufficiently studied.
Methods. Examples of combat operation of aviation of the 214th assault aviation division of the 4th air army are considered. Various types of combat work of the 214th assault aviation division during the Crimean strategic liberation operation from April 11 to May 12, 1944 are disclosed and systematized. The types of combat missions are described and the events of the period of the Crimean strategic offensive operation are reconstructed, in which divisions of the division took part. The composition and structure of the division are presented, and examples of heroism of the personnel and the contribution to the achievement of a common goal are described. In the research process, non-periodical publications, memoirs, as well as archival sources of the Central Archive of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation were used.
Results. The participants and circumstances of the battles of the 214th air division during the Crimean strategic liberation operation from April 8 to May 12, 1944 were established. It was established that the methods used to control aviation in the air, the organization of a mobile command post and interaction with cover fighters and other army units, were completely justified themselves.
